1. What the extension does
Screen Mouse Recorder is a browser extension that lets you record tutorials of a tab, window or your entire screen, with optional webcam, microphone and captions. Cursor movement, clicks and hover positions are used locally to compose the video (smart zoom, cursor highlight, click effects) and are baked into the video file itself. They are never transmitted to our servers as separate data.
The extension does not read the content of the page you are recording. It never captures, stores or transmits tag names, element ids, class names, attributes, form values or visible text of the recorded page, and it does not run on the pages you browse โ only on the tab you explicitly start a recording on, and only for the duration of that recording. Smart zoom is computed from the on-screen geometry of what you click or point at, not from its content.
2. Data created by recordings (the content)
Recordings are video files produced by you. By default they are stored locally in your
browser's IndexedDB (smart-tutorial-recorder) and never leave your device. If
you have an active Pro plan and choose to upload a recording to the cloud, the video file
is sent directly (via a short-lived signed URL) to our Cloudflare R2 storage, and a
metadata record (id, size, type, duration, storage key and the capture settings you chose)
is stored in our backend. No interaction data and no page content is part of that metadata
record.
- Sessions with an account and an active Pro plan: uploads are kept while your account is active. You can delete them at any time.
- Free or anonymous sessions: recordings never leave your device. The free-recording counter that limits how many videos you can record is persisted per IP in a non-reversible form (see ยง5). Nothing is uploaded to our cloud without Pro.
3. What the Pro plan changes
Recording a video and keeping it on your own device is free and never requires an account. Cloud upload, download and export are Pro features. Without an active Pro plan the extension records locally, but it will not upload a recording to our servers, and the download/export controls stay locked. The limit is enforced on our servers, not just in the interface, and it is described here and on the store listing before you install.
4. Account and payments
Creating an account is optional and uses Google sign-in (email and basic profile). If you subscribe to Pro, Paddle is the Merchant of Record: payment data and invoices are handled by Paddle under its own privacy policy. We never see or store your card details.
5. IP addresses
The extension does not read your IP address, and nothing is sent when you install it.
To enforce the free-recording limit without tracking you, our servers derive the client IP
from x-forwarded-for / cf-connecting-ip when you start a
recording, and store only an HMAC-SHA256 hash of it (a one-way,
non-reversible value). Raw IPs are never persisted. The extension itself only connects to
our Supabase backend and to Cloudflare R2.
6. Cookies and local storage
The extension does not use cookies. It stores settings and, if you are signed in, your
session token in chrome.storage.local. The website uses
localStorage only to remember that you were redirected from the "Start Free Trial"
flow so we can point you to the correct checkout step.
7. Third parties
- Supabase: backend hosting, authentication and cloud catalog.
- Cloudflare R2: cloud video storage.
- Paddle: billing (Merchant of Record).
- Google: optional sign-in with Google.
8. Your rights
You can delete local recordings from the extension's "Recordings" view, sign out to remove your session locally, and request deletion of your account data at any time by contacting support (see Support). You may also contact us to access, correct or export your data (GDPR / LGPD).
9. Retention summary
- Local recordings: until you delete them (or uninstall the extension).
- Anonymous recordings: stored only on your device โ nothing reaches our cloud.
- Account cloud videos: while the account is active; delete on request.
- Free-recording counter: persisted as an HMAC hash, no raw IP, no data sent on install.
10. Changes and contact
We may update this policy; the version above always applies. Questions: Support or the support email shown there.
